Rather Have Resess
It is always so hard to wake up for school I am so tired that I act like a fool When I get to my desk, I am so bored that I drool I drool so much it collects in a pool
I wait and I wait all morning for gym I love playing dodge-ball with my buddy Tim Last time that we played, when I threw it at him He whipped it at me nearly breaking my limb
Next class is math and I know that’s a drag I can’t even stand to get my book from my bag Tim puts his hand up ’cause he likes to brag I’d rather have recess so we can play tag
The end of the day is soon coming near I made it through spelling and French with no fear Though reading and writing may still draw a tear When that last buzzer rings I’m off like a deer.
Don't buy music on May 15th
“The day… the music… died… and they’ll be singing, bye-bye miss American pie…” On July 15th, internet radio as we know it will end. That’s the new date (it was May 15th) that the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has set for internet radio broadcasters like Pandora Media to pay up on retro active royalty payments (increased from 0.0008 to 0.0019), which will see many web casters owing in the millions.
This is another example of how the RIAA and their fossilized business moedel is so flawed, they can’t even see how they are hurting themselves and those they represent. To effectively put an end to internet radio is to put another nail in the coffin of legitimate music trade. Internet radio already pays their dues, more so than terrestrial radio and I would be so bold as to state that the number of listeners to internet radio might even be on par with terrestrial radio.
I think the power of internet radio is greater than terrestrial radio. Here is my reason, plain and simple: people who listen to internet radio do so because they made a conscious decision to do so. They went online, sought out a suitable stream and started listening. That’s not always the case with terrestrial radio. How often do you get in your car and the radio is already on… background noise, right? You go to the store, radio is on… do you notice? At the office, the radio is pumped overhead… are you paying attention? But internet radio you are listening to because you chose to find it.
If the RIAA and the CRB want to hurt internet radio, let’s hurt the industry they are trying to protect. Symbolic of the original deadline issued by the CRB I urge all people worldwide to refrain from buying music on May 15th. Don’t buy from iTunes, don’t buy from Amazon, don’t buy from your local brick and mortar store… DON’T BUY MUSIC ON MAY 15th!
I Remember the Day
I remember the day you were born, Your mother struggled, but never faltered, Her drive and conviction never altered.
I remember the day you were born, With your fiery red hair, and your quiet cries, Your squishy cheeks, and your pretty eyes.
I remember the day you were born, Grandma cried, Grandpa kissed your mom They couldn’t wait for this day to come.
I remember the day you were born, Your brother smiled and touched your arm, He would never let you come to harm.
I remember the day you were born, I couldn’t help but shed a tear, My little girl is finally here.

Web Design Survey
Now I don’t mean to infer that because I am a web developer and because you are reading this blog that you must be a web developer yourself, but I bet that a fair number of you are (just a hunch). I realize that I don’t actually talk a great deal about web design and that’s because that is not the whole premise of this site. nutMac is more about speed of workflow and productivity and the tricks and tools that help. That being said, I can’t ignore my own industry anymore than I can own arm, so I want to speak to the web designers and developers out there for a moment.
It can be said that we, the web designers and developers of the world are the uncounted workforce. A recent article on A List Apart has recognized this fact stating that:
Does this accurately reflect you? I know this article struck a cord in me. Not just because I care to know just how I rate and rank with the global community but because I think it’s important to be counted in a notoriously unregulated market. I find every time I bid on a new project or negotiate a new consultation contract, I am testing the waters with pricing all over again. There is far too much uncertainty in the market today.
One of the misconceptions I battle on an ongoing basis is this: most people looking to hire you for a web site think that a “web designer” can do it all. Now granted, a great many of us “designers” can cover more than a few fields, like adding a bit DOM scripting or embedding a flash file in a page but the reality is a “web designer” in the strictest sense will design the look and feel and basic functionality of your site.
How do we battle the uncertainty and misconception? I am not sure entirely, but one thing that is certainly going to help is the survey A List Apart is conducting. It’s an 18 page, online questionnaire designed to learn more about the web industry. If you work in the web industry in an manner, please take a moment to fill out this survey and help our industry become a better known, more standardized one. Click here to take part.
My Brother Doesn’t Care
My mommy says she found me underneath a pickle tree. My daddy said a stork flew in, that’s when I came to be. My Brother doesn’t know, but he wished they never had me.
My teacher said it wasn’t true when I asked her if I hatched. My Grandma always told me I was picked from the cabbage patch. My Brother doesn’t care, and he’s trying to send me back.
My friends have different stories, of why and when and where, And all we want to know is how we got to here from there. “Where do babies come from?”, we keep asking in despair. “Where’d we get our fingers and where do we get our hair?” “From a store wide sale that was selling us in pairs?” My Brother doesn’t know, but know that he does care.

The Baddest Girl
I’m the kind of girl who’s always in trouble, My Daddy gets mad when I won’t leave him be, He makes me march to my room on the double, But I can’t help being bad, it’s just me!
Mom says I’m making her red hair turn grey, Dad says I’m making his hair all fall out, From dawn until dusk, for the whole of the day, They give me my way, if they don’t, then I’ll pout.
I stomp and I scream, I make people stare, I shout and I yell to make people look, If it wasn’t for strangers, my parent don’t care, How much of a terrible tantrum I took.
This one time I climbed on the T.V. it’s true, But when it fell over I knew when to run, my Daddy came after, said “This time your through!” I hid in my closet, I thought I was done.
My most favourite thing in the world to do, Is tiptoe and sneak up on Mommy in bed, And when she is sleeping, I yell to her “BOO!”, She leaps from the blankets and falls on her head!
When it comes to my brother, the stories the same, I get in his face and laugh real loud, I poke and I prod and I drive him insane, And call him the names that I’m not allowed.
Why does my family put up with me though, I must be that cute and witty you see, If they can not pack up their bags and just go, The the reason must be that they truly love me.
And I love them too!

Sticky Windows
When you’re a web designer, screen space is never too plenty. Start developing for a multifaceted web content management system like RapidWeaver or WordPress and suddenly 23 inches of HD widescreen goodness is as crammed as the streets on Bangladesh at rush hour. I have many tricks that have come and gone; the dual monitors (which fill up as fast), the virtual desktops (most clients have been very unstable and unsupported to date), the tighter and tighter resolution (until 12 point text is no longer legible).
Then there are the tricks that stay with me like expose, hot corners, alt+tab and other means of getting from one app to the other. These solutions never addressed the issue of screen clutter though. No matter what I do or what I use, the kind of developing that I do takes up space and the lack of screen space that slows me down.
The solution I use now (thanks to a tip from Elixir Graphics) is Stick Windows from Donelleshi Sotware. This is a bit of a throwback to the OS 9 days where you could “dock” your apps at the side of your screen. I wasn’t sure at first… took a bit of getting used to… but before long… you completely hooked on the Stick Windows way of doing things!
Stick Windows has turned my way of developing around. I used to segment off my work load according to how many windows I could stand to have open at any given time. Now I am not afraid to keep it all open and on the go at all times. Windows are now like my thoughts; they pop up when I feel I have the time to give them some attention and then move off when I am done.
That’s how cool it is; if you have a bunch of windows open, drag to the edge of your screen and poof! It’s turned into a little tab hanging onto the side of your window. You want that window back? Click the tab. Don’t need it anymore? Click on another window and the first one zips back to it little tab again, tucked out of the way. Stick Windows turns a messy screen into an efficient workplace.
I Knew A Man From Kalipan
I knew a man from Kalipan who always scratched his head, He itched and itched a feverish pitch, until his face went red.
I knew a girl from Willowburl who wasn’t ever funny, She always seem to have a cold, her nose was always runny.
I knew a boy from Delamoy who never quite liked school, Been attending from the age of three and still he’s quite a fool.
I knew a lady from McGrady who didn’t like this poem, She thought it was too silly, so she packed up and went home.

SCREEECH HALT 4
So after two routers, endless firewall configurations, three DDNS services… It is now clear to me that Rogers is going to block me from using my home computer as a server by any means necessary. This will not do!
I need VNC connectivity to do the work I do! I need FTP access to my system! I need to be able to serve a clients website on a local environment that I have complete control over during the development process and I need to be able to share that with them! But every time I get these systems in place and running, Rogers shuts me down in under 24 hours! Is this possible or am I losing my mind?
How is that I can pay close to $60 dollars a month for premium service and be able to do nothing more than view static HTML? Is anyone else being completely choked like this?
