Adam Merrifield

a picture of me
I am a web designer, theme designer, professional photographer and internet personality. I make many pretty things and I write a lot of content for the internet.

I am one of those guys that, because of the industry I am in, need to be connected at all times. At any given moment you'll find me posting on a forum, updating with twitter, Digging things worthy of attention, uploading pictures, or tagging cool sites.

here i am

seyDoggy Systems:
This is home base, the corporate headquarters, the hub, if you will, seyDoggy.com.

what i am

I am the owner and operator of seyDoggy Systems, a small theme, code and design outfit based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. We primarily develop web based technologies but have begun to dabble in the desktop realm.

what i do

I code like a fool. I design like a fool. I am happiest when I can split my time between the two (though I tire of Photoshop faster then I do TextMate or Terminal), and somehow I have managed to etch out a living doing so.

A whole bag o’ #canadianmusicfind

I’ve been saving these ones up for a about a week or so. There is lots of great Canadian music here from #canadianmusicfind.

Rapidweaver Classroom Relaunches With Some seyDoggy Flair

RapidWeaver Classroom launches with a new siteThere are so many cases when a developer can feel proud; new product launches, mention in the media, collaboration with other developers and so on… but nothing can quite compare to seeing your work and efforts brilliantly used in a manner that really make you look good. That’s the case for me today when I saw the relaunch of the popular site and RapidWeaver resource, RapidWeaver Classroom.

Ryan and I have worked closely together in the past. He’s created some tutorial movies for us and we have both been active in cross promoting each others services. Ryan is an absolute wizard when it comes to RapidWeaver usage and his students say his approach is kind, patient and always measured. So when Ryan asked if I could create a custom theme for his new site, I jumped at the opportunity.

Ryan knew exactly what he wanted and being the expert in RapidWeaver that he is, I knew he would have no trouble expressing his needs. We had a working draft in about a days time and we were able to nail down the final version in very little time.

Now that I have seen the final result, I can see why Ryan’s students sing his praises. He is truly a consummate professional in RapidWeaver circles.

“Today I’m going to be a kitty…”

My daughter insisted on making this movie for her older brother (who lives far away). It’s a story of her trip to the circus… and she apparently needed to tell it just right. She’s my little perfectionist I guess.

Celebrating the life of Mel Brown

It’s a day of joy despite sorrow as family, friends and fans gather for the funeral of legendary bluesman Mel Brown.

You’ll recall in my post, Mel Brown, at stage left, one of the things that brought my emotions and memories of Mel Brown around full circle was the presence of my old amp on stage behind Mels guitar and stool, assuming it’s old position. Seeing it here in this moving and powerful video gives me chills. I am glad, in some small way, I could help pay tribute to the legend of Mel Brown.

A better way to CMS with RapidWeaver

CuchyCMS Stack is a brilliant ideaThere are some tools that come along and everyone just sighs, “How did we ever get along without this?”

Stacks from YourHead Software is one of those tools that made RapidWeaver more complete then we ever knew it needed to be. What makes Stacks so amazing is that it is what ever it needs to be to whoever needs it. So far it’s been a power layout tool of endless shapes and sizes, an ExtraContent device, and RSS scraper, a Twitter badge, a media player… and now, thanks to Joe Workman, a CMS.

A Content Management System (CMS) allows clients to edit their content after their web design/development staff has published the site. So far there have been only a handful of attempts to bring CMS to the RapidWeaver platform; WebYep and PlusKit’s @gdoc(()) implementation. The former requires site licensing and the latter rely’s on Google ever changing Google Docs API.

Now there is a CushyCMS(free) implementation built into a Stacks Library item (or Stacks plugin) available from Joe Workman. By simple dragging a CushyCMS stack onto your stacks page, anything you drop into that CushyCMS stack will be editable on the client side.

Brilliant!

Monsters Under My Bed

Monsters under my bed

There’s monsters under my bed daddy,
I keep my eye on them,
That’s why I’m sleeping on the floor,
So they don’t get out again.

They keep me up all night sometimes,
Fighting until the morn,
They can’t decide how to get out,
Afraid of my own scorn.

Somehow they manage to escape,
And it’s never very long,
Since every morning when I get up,
Those monsters are always gone.

Lunch in the sun

Lunch in the sun
Lunch in the sun, originally uploaded by seyDoggy.

The girls, so thrilled with the moderately nice weather, could not get enough of the outdoors this weekend. They spend most of Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the backyard. They wouldn’t even come in for their lunch.

Here they are, eating their chicken salad and and cottage cheese at their picnic table in the yard. Cold noses or not, they were not about to waste a minute indoors.

Mel Brown’s Chicken Fat Has Arrived!

Mel Brown Chicken Fat CD has arrived

Today I got my copy of Mel Brown’s Chicken Fat in the mail. I think it’s great that Verve has reissued classic albums like this. I just wish they would hurry up and get the rest of them out there too. I would love to get my hands on a copy of The Wizard.

If you are a Mel Brown fan and don’t have any of his classic vinyl, I suggest getting a copy of this CD. It’s very well packaged and comes with a great insert that includes a 4 x 6 image of the then 27 year old Mel Brown. On the reverse side are the original liner notes which are a blast from the past. Herb Ellis, Ronald Brown, Paul Humphrey, Arthur Wright and Gerald Wiggins were the other personnel on this classic reissue.
